2. Mount Coot-tha Lookout: Brisbane’s Best View

One of the most memorable moments of my trip was standing at the Mount Coot-tha Lookout, taking in the panoramic views of Brisbane and beyond. From the top, you can see the city skyline, the winding Brisbane River, and even Moreton Bay on a clear day.

I visited during sunset, and watching the city transition from day to night was absolutely breathtaking. The lookout has plenty of seating areas where you can relax and enjoy the view. If you’re feeling active, there are numerous walking trails leading up to the summit. I took the shorter trail from the car park, which was an enjoyable hike surrounded by native bushland.

3. Brisbane City Botanic Gardens: A Green Escape

For a peaceful escape in the heart of the city, I headed to the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. This sprawling green space along the Brisbane River is ideal for leisurely strolls, picnics, or simply relaxing under the shade of a tree.

The gardens feature beautiful walking paths lined with towering palms, vibrant flower beds, and scenic ponds. One of the highlights for me was the Bamboo Grove, where the rustling of the leaves created a soothing ambiance. I also loved the ornamental ponds, which were teeming with water lilies and ducks.

On weekends, the gardens often host free events and markets, so it’s worth checking the schedule before your visit.

4. Brisbane Riverwalk: A Scenic Stroll

Walking along the Brisbane Riverwalk was one of the simplest yet most enjoyable activities I did. This well-maintained path stretches along the Brisbane River, offering uninterrupted views of the water and the city skyline. The floating walkway section was particularly unique and gave me the feeling of walking right on the river.

I started my walk near New Farm and followed the path towards the CBD, passing iconic landmarks like the Story Bridge along the way. It’s a great spot for jogging, cycling, or just taking a leisurely walk, and there are plenty of benches where you can sit and watch boats glide by.

5. Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA)

As someone who loves art, I was thrilled to learn that the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) offer free entry to their permanent collections. Located on the South Bank, these two galleries house an impressive range of artworks, from traditional pieces to cutting-edge contemporary installations.

Wandering through the galleries was both inspiring and thought-provoking. One of my favorite exhibits featured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, which provided deep insights into Australia’s rich cultural heritage. GOMA’s contemporary art installations were equally fascinating, with interactive displays and multimedia works that kept me engaged for hours.

6. Roma Street Parkland: A Hidden Gem

If you’re a nature lover, Roma Street Parkland is a must-visit. This beautifully landscaped park is often overlooked by visitors, but it’s one of Brisbane’s most tranquil spots. I spent an entire afternoon exploring its themed gardens, water features, and lush greenery.

The Spectacle Garden was a standout for me, with its colorful flower beds and intricate design. I also enjoyed walking through the Fern Gully, where the cool, shaded pathways felt like stepping into a tropical rainforest. Throughout the park, there are plenty of picnic spots, so pack a lunch and enjoy the serene surroundings.

7. New Farm Park: Perfect for Relaxation

Another gem I discovered was New Farm Park, located along the Brisbane River. This historic park is perfect for unwinding, whether you want to relax on the grassy lawns, enjoy a picnic, or play a game of frisbee.

The rose gardens were in full bloom during my visit, filling the air with a delightful fragrance. I also noticed plenty of families enjoying the playground, which features a charming treehouse design. From the park, you can also access the Brisbane Powerhouse, a cultural hub that often hosts free exhibitions and events.

8. Story Bridge: A Walk to Remember

The Story Bridge is one of Brisbane’s most iconic landmarks, and while climbing it comes with a cost, walking across it is completely free. I took a leisurely stroll across the bridge one evening, and the views of the Brisbane River and the city skyline were stunning.

The bridge is well-lit at night, making it a safe and enjoyable experience. If you time your visit right, you might even catch one of the bridge’s special light displays, which often coincide with festivals or causes.

9. Wynnum Esplanade: Seaside Serenity

For a change of scenery, I took a short drive to the Wynnum Esplanade, a charming seaside spot that’s perfect for a free day out. The waterfront promenade is ideal for walking or cycling, and the views of Moreton Bay are incredibly soothing.

I particularly enjoyed exploring the Wynnum Wading Pool, a heritage-listed tidal pool that’s great for families. The surrounding parklands have picnic tables and barbecue facilities, making it a great spot for a relaxed outdoor meal.

10. Cultural Forecourt and The Wheel of Brisbane

While the Wheel of Brisbane isn’t free to ride, the surrounding Cultural Forecourt area is a great place to explore without spending a cent. I enjoyed walking along the riverfront promenade, taking in the vibrant atmosphere and the spectacular views of the city.

There are often free performances and events held in this area, so keep an eye out for what’s on during your visit. Even just sitting by the river and people-watching was a delightful way to spend an evening.

11. Kangaroo Point Cliffs: A Sunset Spot

The Kangaroo Point Cliffs are a fantastic free spot for breathtaking views of Brisbane, especially during sunset. I found a cozy spot on the grass and watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the city skyline.

The cliffs are also a popular spot for rock climbing, and while I didn’t try it myself, it was fascinating to watch climbers scale the walls. For a more active experience, you can walk or cycle along the paths at the base of the cliffs.

12. Brisbane Markets and Events

During my visit, I stumbled upon several free markets and events that added a fun and lively touch to my trip. The Jan Powers Farmers Markets at New Farm Park were a highlight, offering fresh produce, handmade crafts, and live entertainment.

The Brisbane Festival, which takes place in September, features many free events, including the spectacular Riverfire fireworks display. Even outside of festival season, there are often free community events, so be sure to check what’s happening during your stay.
